The most common concern from people new to tallow skincare is whether beef fat will clog pores or cause breakouts. This concern is understandable but usually unfounded, and understanding why requires a brief look at what makes a substance comedogenic.
Is Tallow Comedogenic?
The comedogenicity rating system scores fats and oils by their likelihood to clog pores on a scale of 0 to 5. Tallow scores a 2 to 3 on this scale — moderate, not high. For context, coconut oil scores a 4, and many synthetic emollients used in conventional moisturizers score comparably to tallow.
The more important factor is that tallow's fatty acid composition is close to human skin's natural composition. This similarity means tallow integrates with the skin rather than sitting on top of it and occluding pores the way heavier, dissimilar fats can. Most people who switch to tallow from conventional moisturizers do not experience increased breakouts.
The Adjustment Period
Skin that has been using synthetic moisturizers for years has adapted to those products. When switching to tallow, some people experience an adjustment period of two to four weeks during which the skin normalizes. This can look like minor breakouts, excess oiliness, or temporary dryness — the skin recalibrating as its natural barrier function adjusts.
This is not an allergic reaction and is not a reason to stop. It is transient. If you push through the adjustment period, most people with sensitive skin find tallow products more compatible than the synthetic alternatives they came from.
How to Start
Apply a small amount to one area of the face or body for one week before using it broadly. This patch test approach identifies any genuine sensitivity before you have committed to a full-face routine. Start with a thin layer — tallow products are concentrated and a small amount covers a larger area than a comparable amount of water-based lotion.
The Tallow Skincare Starter Kit ($38) is the lowest-risk entry point — smaller product sizes designed for exactly this kind of trial. It is in our Beef Tallow Skincare collection.
